What this page is
This page quotes r/FictionWriting's rules as ThreadFox read them on 2026-10-04. The quoted text is the community's; the verdict above is our reading of it. Conditions often decide whether a post fits (a required thread, flair, posting day, account age or karma), and r/FictionWriting's current rules on Reddit always win over this page.
Free, for a specific product: a researched Reddit plan by email (communities whose rules fit your post, quoted and dated), or ThreadFox Lite, read-only tools an AI assistant can use to read a community's current rules itself, through your own Chrome (Claude Code: claude mcp add threadfox-lite -- uvx threadfox-lite). For an assistant that also writes and posts within each community's rules, the ThreadFox kit is $49 once.
Want to post here? Get ThreadFox ($49): your AI (Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Codex) reads a community's current rules, writes one post that fits and posts once from your own Chrome. No Claude? - its rules on Reddit
If you're writing fiction, whether it be flash fiction, short stories, novellas, novel, epics, screenplays, poetry, or even something like writing for a videogame then this subreddit is for you. Join us, ask your questions, share your knowledge, and use us to have a look at your work.
Where to post: Monthly stickied promotion post (a new one is stickied at the start of each month); no outside links in normal posts
What it requires: Direct links to outside sites (YouTube, blogs, personal websites, podcasts, social media, etc.) are banned in normal posts; promote only in the monthly sticky; new-account restrictions apply (rule 1); no Wattpad discussion
What its rules say about promotion
Self-Promotion and Outside Links
Do not post direct links to outside sites. Outside sites include but are not limited to: YouTube Channels Instagram Twitter Tumblr Personal or Business Facebook Pages Blogs Vlogs Webpages Podcasts Web Series Personal Websites Any site or sub that is not /r/FictionWriting At the start of each month, a new post will be stickied for the entire month, where you can promote your writing, your books, your blogs, your YouTube channels, your social media pages, etc.
Images
In connection with rule 8 above, we do allow images through links on Imgur, so long as they're writing related and boost the credibility or impact of the post. So still, no memes, self-promotion, bullying, or spoilers.
Wattpad
Wattpad might be a great place to share your work, with thousands of readers and writers to see the things you write. But that also comes with proven risk. Many times, writers and authors have fallen to the trap that is Wattpad. They write something original or incredible, it is then stolen, worked on, edited, and published by another writer, and Wattpad doesn't lift a finger to help. So, Wattpad is not allowed to be talked about in this group.
All 10 rules of r/FictionWriting
- New Accounts
Posts from accounts that are less than a week old will be held in the moderator queue for posts until a moderator approves your post or until your account becomes seven days old. This can take up to 72 hours. Deleting and reposting your post in an effort to have it approved faster will result in a warning and then a 3-day ban if done a second time. - Spam
If we see that a post has been posted several times because it didn't get any comments or it was downvoted, it can be safe to assume your post will be removed. Same applies if duplicate comments are repetitively thrown into a post or several posts. - Self-Promotion and Outside Links
- Non-Fiction
As it is obvious due to our subreddit name, this is a group for writers of fiction. Non-fiction and non-fiction stories aren't going to be accepted into the subreddit and will be removed if found. If we, the moderators, find a post that contains these topics with no elements that are intended to aid other writers of fiction, it will be removed. So at least be smart about it and turn it into a resource or a point of discussion tailored for fiction writers. - Bullying, Harassment, and Trolling
We pride ourselves for being diligent in keeping this a safe place for you. If ever in a situation where you feel attacked through harassment, bullying, or trolling, flag the comment or post and the moderators will be with you as soon as possible to try and help. Breaking this rule comes with a one-warning-and-out system. For a first-time offence, the comments or the post will be removed and you'll be sent a warning. Any further actions similar to the last will result in a ban. - No Pirates!
Do not post links to, explain how to access, or ask how to get a hold of creative works that have not been authorised by the owner. This includes but is not limited to: YouTube videos or files containing audiobooks. PDFs of books. Online documents containing entire books. Torrent websites. Any external link to original content must be on the creator's own site or be authorised by the creator to have been posted elsewhere. If unsure whether it's pirated or not, assume it is. - Spoiling
When talking about fiction that already exists or will someday exist, nobody likes spoilers. To be told what will happen in something you're reading or plan to read can ruin the entire experience for someone else. So please, refrain from including spoilers in your posts and your comments. In posts, include (Spoiler) at the beginning of your title, and use appropriate markdown formatting for comments. - Low-Effort Posts, Quotes and/or Memes
Low-effort posts are just not allowed. Each post requires there to be a body written for each title that doesn't directly match the said title. And any posts with an image goes straight to our moderator queue unless you're a whitelisted Redditor in this sub. That means, that even if you want to make a post like this, it will never see the light of day. - Images
In connection with rule 8 above, we do allow images through links on Imgur, so long as they're writing related and boost the credibility or impact of the post. So still, no memes, self-promotion, bullying, or spoilers. - Wattpad
What the written rules don't show
- Unpublished minimums. Many communities remove posts from new or low-karma accounts through AutoModerator settings that are not on the rules page, often before a moderator sees them.
- Reddit's own filters. Reddit's site-wide spam filters can remove posts from accounts that mostly share links to their own site, in any community.
- The community's norms. Many communities see themselves as peers, not an audience: post where you already take part, and make the post worth reading without the link.
